Kolkata – Food Tour Walk

We begin our Kolkata food tour walk from shops that dishes out sweets that are signature of Bengal, like ‘naru‘ and ‘moaa.’ The tradition of 5 centuries of Bengal, beginning with Sri Chaitanya and his role in moulding the culinary traditions of the region is narrated following a visit to the famous shops that are known for its ‘tele bhaja‘ (fritters). Our tour ends with sampling iconic foods of Kolkata like Mutton Pantheras Cutlet, Braised Cutlet, Babu Sandesh, Rosogolla and relating these foods to the stories culture and politics of 18th century Kolkata that shaped its foodscape.

Bagbazar is one of the oldest parts of the city and holds key to several traits that lies at the heart of the identity of a Bengali Bhadralok (gentleman). Ranging from education and politics to religion and social work, Bagbazar is the area that has contributed immensely to the image of Calcutta as a cultural hub. Bagbazar has an important place in the international Ramakrishna Movement with many sites that have the rare privilege of being associated with the events in the lives of Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Ma, Swami Vivekananda and other stalwarts of the movement.

Food is one of the main constituents that defines the cultural canvas of Kolkata. Bengali food has been influenced by different cultures from the world over that has set its foot on the soil. Bengali cuisine, as we know it today has traits of influence from food of the English, Portuguese, Armenian, French, Greeks Chinese and other nationalities. The culinary practices of Mughals and Pathans have also helped to shape today’s Bengali cuisine. Thus, the Bengali cooking pot is indeed a melting pot of cultures – which can be demonstrated through a ‘Food Walk’.
